As part of my doctoral studies at the Science Visualization Lab I currently developing an ultra-high-resolution 3D scanner for objects ranging in size from approximately 2mm to 50mm. This scanner will enable the creation of highly detailed 3D models with equally detailed textures in true-to-life colors.
In addition, innovative AI methods such as NVIDIA's NeRF are being tested and evaluated. With such approaches, it is possible to convert transparent surfaces such as wings or metallic surfaces, as often found in beetles, into 3D models.
